Celebrating National Mentoring Month: Empowering Youth Through Meaningful Connections
January is National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate the transformative power of mentorship and recognize those who play a vital role in supporting youth development. At the Carlson Family Foundation, we believe every young person deserves a constellation of caring adults to help them realize their potential. Our Constellation funding priority, which focuses on supporting organizations that nurture relationships that shape and empower young lives, is a testament to this commitment.
Why Mentoring Matters
Research shows strong, supportive relationships with mentors can profoundly impact a young person’s life. Mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and the tools youth need to develop their agency, identity, and ability to pursue their dreams. However, one in three young people report not having a formal or informal mentor outside their family. This gap disproportionately affects youth of color and those from low-income backgrounds.
Supporting a Constellation of Caring Adults
Through our Constellation funding priorities, we focus on ensuring young people have access to a network of caring adults equipped to support their growth and development. This includes:
- Out-of-School Programs: Providing access to high-quality, youth-centered programs emphasizing development and agency.
- K-12 Schools: Expanding innovative models that strengthen relationships between students and educators to improve academic and personal outcomes.
- Parents and Caregivers: Supporting adults in their essential roles as mentors and advocates for youth, focusing on trauma-informed approaches.
